The Allegri Singers was founded in 1981 by Paul Stevens with the aim of performing a wide variety of choral music to the highest standard, specialising particularly in twentieth century repertoire.

Since then, the Allegri Singers has performed in many prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and St John’s Smith Square, and as a guest choir at the Salisbury Festival, the Petworth Festival and the Cork International Music Festival. It has taken part in several radio and television broadcasts, and made two CDs under its former conductor, Louis Halsey.

We always watch the conductor

Well, perhaps not always!

The choir’s musical director from 1994 until 2000, Dr Michael Nicholas, former Organist and Master of Choristers at Norwich Cathedral, widened the choir’s repertoire to include more renaissance and baroque works, including some programmes with period instruments, while continuing the choir’s commitment to music composed in recent decades.

Our next conductor, the dynamic young singer, Andrew Kennedy, gave the choir an even more vibrant sound and imaginatively broadened its repertoire to include a wider range of works than is normally tackled by a chamber choir.

Keith Roberts, a multi-faceted musician - counter-tenor, conductor, composer and arranger, succeeded Andrew as musical director in September 2003.

The choir currently promotes four concerts each year. In addition to these, the Allegri Singers is pleased to accept a number of invitations to perform at corporate or private functions and at commemorative services in return for a contribution to choir funds. From time to time, it also sings weekend services at a British cathedral.

The Allegri Singers is a registered charity (no. 287271) and is affiliated to 'Making Music' (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies) and Bromley Arts Council.
